Okay, but graham, I've been looking into the origins here, and I can see a sharp division from post-punk to industrial.

Industrial, it's sort of the "anti-pretty" music.

Here...is a pretty good example of "industrial" by Godflesh, though you are correct that "industrial" music goes back farther. Coil is a good example too.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_9j5Nd1m708

Now listen to a better synthesized version of industrial that NIN put together, not the lyrics, not the video, but the opening you hear the sounds of "industry" that was the point, to use metal drums, chainsaws, scraping sounds, and all the things you would hear in a factory for example.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6lzb-jYZrLE

Maybe we could move this to it's own topic? I would love to continue the discussion without messing up the thread okay?

Thank YOU GRAHAM!!!!

Did you listen?

I mean, G...There's nothing totally new under the sun, but there are interesting experiments and fusions that I like.

I loved the Tom Jones song.

I'm a big Nick Cave fan, but it doesn't stop me from being a big NIN fan, or a Metallica fan. I really like Loreena McKinnet and Azam Ali (aka Niyaz, Vas), or Lisa Gerrard. It's all good. It's just different, and I like the diversity of music and it has to grab me....move me...or be thematically interesting.

Which Tom Jones song? I have seen him twice in concert. He's fantastic...

I enjoy industrial music because of the deep, driving bass lines.

I like heavy metal for the same reasons -- deep driving guitar riffs.

I enjoy techno and electronica as well being a big fan of Shoutcast and its international music streams.

I really don't know what post-punk means...

I mean is The Clash post-punk or are they punk -- did punk end with the Sex Pistols, the Ramones, etc...

Industrial I think grew more out of the Synth-pop of the 1980s --- taking Kraftwerk's influence one step further...

I never really got into industrial, but when I was doing some small concert promotions those bands were the most fun to deal with (better sense of humor). Punk bands weren't really worth the trouble, both what they were like and what their fans were like.

Punkers to me -- though I have enjoyed their music -- they always seemed to brood too much and take themselves too seriously -- except the Ramones -- whereas as you say -- the industrial folks were a little more able to have fun...

Taz: I do really appreciate talking music with you. Actually, I just really like music period. I love the Dervishes too.

I'm going to try to figure out how to get the industrial music cassette tape I have in some form that will allow me to put it up on Youtube or something. I don't know how, but someone must know.

I'm going to come back to this later so don't let the thread disappear.

I mean, honestly, I'm so sick of listening to the lies and the dirt in this campaign I want to puke, so...Music is a great way to relax, or to blow off steam as the case may be. Like the Beastie Boys, or NIN, or Metallica, or Iced Tea....ah and this could go on forever.

Great song! I saw him in NYC on a triple bill back in the 1970s, can't remember who else was on it.
Got into him because he did some session work for Elton on Honky Chateau.

music is music and should not be categorized anyway. It's all connected.

Yes. It does sound a lot like that.

Can you give me directions to the Shoutout music you were writing about?

Waterbone has a nice sound.

Wiki has a very good entry on "industrial music" and all of the influences etc. It shows some of what Graham was saying about the early influences, but it also shows the sub-genre's and gives a good explanation of what I meant when I said it was the "anti-pretty" music. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Industrial_music

Searching for common ground on politics -- finding it with music... biggrin.gif

The Beastie Boys...

Sabotage or An Open Letter to NYC...

http://www.quedeletras.com/video-37291-vid...-letter-to-nyc/

One of the best concerts I ever saw...

No Sleep Till Brooklyn...Intergalactic...

Their music is -- well it may sound apropo -- but cool --- is the word I come to...

And how about the Red Hot Chili Peppers -- saw them in Madrid at the Pallacio Vistalegre --- what a show...

Their song By The Way -- and their cover of Fugazi's Waiting Room...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gDoJg3tEFSg

Intense...

I just ordered MIA Paper Planes

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7sei-eEjy4g

because they have the Clash's Straight to Hell mixed in which I think is a beautiful little ditty...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HQwm1v1R-qM

I get tears in my eyes listening to this music...

There is a phrase "the crush of beauty"

And when I hear certain songs...I feel that -- it sort of takes your breath away...
tazvil04
heart -- in case you cannot tell --- I really enjoy talking music with you as well cool.gif

I really like Stand or Fall by the Fixx...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_HRUSX-XW0s

That song really takes me away...

And their other song Red Skies at Night which I tease little kids is really Pink Spiders that Bite...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-gYBvSx_wCA

Another group I really like is Sisters of Mercy...

Their song Ribbons...has a real nice edge...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W5qzaHC3opw

They have others -- More, Dominion/Mother Russia etc.

And how could I forget one of my favorite not so famous bands...Type O Negative...

Talk about sarcasm...

I Know You're Fing Someone Else...is a classic -- (Profanity Warning)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5odH-P383h4

That song is so funny -- it sounds like the Bay City Rollers meet Black Sabbath... Rofl2.gif

Their Black No. 1 is great...its a great Halloween type song...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2fX6hV1kuWg

And their cover's of Summer Breeze

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qElfhXnKxR8

And Cinnamon Girl

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cgei14MRkFI

If Howard Stern was a rock singer he would be Peter Steele...of Type O

Knowing what I think I know if you -- if you do not know Type O -- I think you'll buy one of their albums...

Its probably not hard to imagine that Halloween is my favorite non-religious Holiday --- Easter would have to be my favorite...for what it means...and all.
tazvil04
I like Johnny Hollow too...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8zPsQF9Clv8...feature=related

Quite haunting music...

And of course I am a huge fan of David Lynch's Julie Cruise whom I believe he uses in either Blue Velvet or Wild At Heart...

Now, if you want to get back to a little rock and roll I recommend Antrax...and their cover of Joe Jackson's hit...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WASOsIUrF2o

But their best cover...Bring the Noise which actually (profanity warning)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fSPeg5Nw9Tk

Which actually features I believe an excerpt from Blue Velvet with Dennis Hopper saying "I can hear your fing radio"...

And we could go more rap with...DMX "Up In Here" which I love the music to -- but the lyrics are pretty off the wall ---(Profanity Wise) warning!!!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w9FHbP2-of8

tazvil04
Then if you want to go over the top with some death metal moshing music there is Ripping Corpse

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B87O8ziUDLg

If you want to dance then I love Hey ya --- by Outkast which is the best dancing song I have ever heard...

It is so addictive...

But I don't want to monopolize this thread with my bizarre tastes in music... laugh.gif

Great! Don't worry! Bring it on. I have to work on the computer all day, all night sometimes too these days. So, I can listen to music at the same time, and I really, really like that.

I think I was talking about Type O Negative, in the debate thread where we started. I love Black number 1, and Christian Woman, but I would caution anyone who is easily offended against listening to it. innocent.gif I can't listen to Summer Breeze without feeling terrible....I once broke someone's heart, and that was the song that I received in the mail a month or so later. I know it must sound silly, but in my mind, there is nothing more horrible to me than hurting someone like that, and though it sometimes is unavoidable, it's gut-wrenching for me.

Halloween is my favorite holiday! It far surpasses any other holiday to me. In fact, the month of October, the lead up to Halloween, with all the cheesy horror flicks, all the carving of pumpkins, decorating the house, and drinking mulled cider while making costumes is the BEST time of the year. Both of my sons are working each night in a very nice hauted house this year, and neither of them can talk already, they are so hoarse! I love it.

Graham, I love your music too, but some of it is too sad for me to listen to. If I'm going to cry, I reserve that for moving pieces of writing, political speeches/conventions, superbowls, world series games, and the Olympics....I know that's odd but then, it is what it is.

Now, I'm off to listen to all the music you both posted. Be back later.

No, I can handle some sad things.

Like one of my all time favorite bands/singers Concrete Blonde, Johnette Napolitano: This song makes me sad but in a way that I can deal with, not that total despair of George Jones songs.

Reminds me of another favorite country song Graham, but you must have it, I think it goes "would you lay with me in a field of stone, if my lips were dry would you wet them dear...." I can't remember who sang that though. Gotta work, so I can't look, but I am listening to the music you two pointed out.

Sad is good...just so its not depressing sad, but beautiful sad...

That's a great one...

I also like Bjork

Her cover of Shirley Bassey's You Only Live Twice is one of the best cover songs I have ever heard...

I firmly believe that the Bond people are missing out in not invirting her to do a theme song...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bi5f3TVhnoE

She is one of the most charismatic artists I have ever seen in concert. Her show at Radio City Music Hall some years back was surreal...

Wish I could go to heart's sons' haunted houses... laugh.gif

Dig It Up....

My girlfriend lives in the ground.
My friends ask why she's not around,
She won't come home.
I'm so alone (you'll never know!).
You can't bury love,
You've gotta dig it up.
Yeah, you've gotta live it up.

I take her flowers each day.
I place them over her grave.
I want her back
Because I look so bad, so bad in black
(Like a maniac)

You can't bury love,
You've gotta dig it up,
Yeah, you've gotta live it up.

Please, darling, come home to me.
Well, I'll make you so happy, you will see!
I'll paint your room
In pink and blue
(I'll even choose the colour scheme for you!).
You can't take away my love
I'll never give it up!
Yeah, I'm gonna dig it up.

(Don't!)
(Don't! I Don't want to know!)

My girlfriend lives in the ground.
My friends, you ask me why she's six feet down,
I can't tell you why Œcos if I even try
I'd fall down flat on my face
And I'd cry, "you can't take away my love"
I'm gonna dig it up!
I'm gonna live it up, yeah,
I'm gonna dig it up, dig it up.
I'm never gonna stop
With that loving cup.
Gotta fill it up.

Yes, I do to. But, sometimes their lyrics are too "needy." I can't really explain that....But, they are still beautiful and "Bring Me To Life" sounds like it has a NIN tinge to it doesn't it.

She's much better in concert, but this tribute to our "witches" seems appropriate for Halloween. Have a look:

When I was going to school in Nebraska I stayed at a friend's house during the summer and he had this album...being from the East coast I found it quite a comeuppance to see how elitist I had been to think that out there I knew the newest and best music -- but instead someone in the middle of the country had much broader taste than I... cool.gif

The lyrics are great -- with the song I did not know if one could understand the lyrics on youtube so I appended them...
