SNOWDENVILLE, Pa. -- The Obama girls are still waiting for dad to make good on his Election Night promise to adopt a new first dog. Vice President-elect Joe Biden, however, recently took wife Jill up on her pledge to add a four-legged member to their family.

Last week, Biden appeared at the home of Chester County, Pa., breeder Linda Brown and picked out a male German shepherd puppy. Now that word has leaked out about his new family, the future second dog spent Thursday getting a taste of life in the spotlight.

News outlets inundated the Brown family with requests to pay a visit to the 6-week-old pup. By late Thursday afternoon, the dog was slumbering with his siblings as Brown gave interviews. Also on hand were the pup's father, Rex, and great-grandfather, Hans.

"They're tired," Brown said of the puppies. "They've been doing this all day."

The Bidens ended up at Brown's at the culmination of a weeklong search for an even-tempered puppy by New Castle County Police K-9 coordinator Cpl. Mark Tobin. Tobin also owns and operates K9 Camp Dog Obedience School and was hired by Biden, at the vice president-elect's personal expense, to help pick out and train the new family pet.

Tobin traveled from Baltimore to the Philadelphia suburbs looking for the right pup. After he met Brown and saw the litter of brown and tan dogs, the two of them set aside three as possible new additions to the Biden clan.

Obama to take oath on Abe Lincoln's Bible

WASHINGTON (AFP) — Barack Obama will take the oath as US president on the same Bible used to swear in president Abraham Lincoln, the committee planning his inauguration said in a statement Tuesday.

The presidential inaugural committee said the Lincoln Bible would be borrowed from the collections at the Library of Congress.

"President-elect Obama is deeply honored that the Library of Congress has made the Lincoln Bible available for use during his swearing-in," said Presidential Inaugural Committee Executive Director Emmett Beliveau in a statement.

With Obama's swearing-in on January 20, the historic Bible with its gilded edges and burgundy velvet binding will see its first use during a presidential inauguration since 1861 when Lincoln, the 16th US president, was sworn in.

"The president-elect is committed to holding an inauguration that celebrates America's unity, and the use of this historic Bible will provide a powerful connection to our common past and common heritage," Beliveau said.

Lincoln, from the state of Illinois which Obama represented in the US Congress, presided over the country's biggest domestic crisis, the American Civil War, and ended slavery, but he was killed by an assassin's bullet in 1865.

There is no constitutional requirement that a Bible be used during inaugurations, but US presidents traditionally have used Bibles for their swearing-in ceremonies.

Dance, Dance, Dance! Obama Will Have 10 Parties

WASHINGTON (AP) -- President-elect Barack Obama and his wife, Michelle, will twirl their way through 10 official inaugural balls on Jan. 20.

The Presidential Inaugural Committee said Wednesday that the Obamas would attend 10 official balls, one more than President George W. Bush and Laura Bush attended in 2005.

For ball-goers and Obama-watchers, a few questions remain: What will Michelle Obama wear? Who will perform? And will young daughters Sasha and Malia attend?

No word from the committee on those fronts.

Six of the official balls will be held at the Washington Convention Center, with others at Union Station, the Washington Hilton, the National Building Museum and the DC Armory.

But the biggest parties this time may well be unofficial.

MTV and BET are throwing televised parties, while the Creative Coalition will hold a gala to be headlined by Elvis Costello. Dionne Warwick is hosting the American Music Inaugural Ball.

It's hard to believe--pinch me please. At this time next month we will be into the Obama administration. Hard to recall when a change in U.S. government has been so welcomed, not only here but globally.

What a wonderful event to look forward to, can't you just feel a lot of the last eight years of manipulative rule falling away like a snake shedding its skin.

A rare gathering: Bush, Obama and 3 ex-presidents
By BEN FELLER – 50 minutes ago
WASHINGTON (AP) — An entire generation has gone by since the nation last saw this tableau of American history: every living U.S. president together at the White House.
Consider it time for a reunion among the members of one of the world's most elite clubs, plus the one man about to join it — Barack Obama.
Picking up on an idea from Obama, President George W. Bush on Wednesday was hosting a lunch for the incoming president and the three living former presidents: Bill Clinton, George H.W. Bush and Jimmy Carter. It will be the first time all the living presidents have gathered at the White House since 1981.
Bush and Obama also will meet privately for roughly 30 minutes in the Oval Office before the lunch. That one-on-one meeting, coming just 13 days before Obama's inauguration, is more likely to zero in on grim current events, with war in the Gaza Strip and the economy in a recession.
The Vice President-elect, Joe Biden, was also coming to the White House Wednesday morning for a closed meeting with former President Bush.
Considering the bond they hold in history, U.S. presidents gets together infrequently, particularly at the White House. And when they are in the same room, it is usually for a milestone or somber moment — a funeral of a world leader, an opening of a presidential library, a commemoration of history.
Not this time.
The White House says Obama suggested the idea of a presidential gathering when he met Bush in the Oval Office in November. And Bush went for it.
"It's going to be an interesting lunch," Bush told an interviewer recently. When asked what the five men would talk about, Bush said: "I don't know. I'm sure (Obama's) going to ask us all questions, I would guess. If not, we'll just share war stories."
They have plenty of those, political and otherwise. Their paths to power have long been entwined.
Carter lost the presidency to Ronald Reagan, whose running mate was George H.W. Bush. Bush later won election but lost after one term to Clinton. Then Bush's son, the current president, defeated Clinton's vice president, Al Gore. And this year Obama won after long linking his opponent, John McCain, to Bush.
Those campaign rivalries tend to soften over time as presidents leave the White House and try to adopt the role of statesmen — although Carter, even as an ex-president, has had some critical public words for the current president's foreign policy.
All five men were to pose for a group photo in the Rose Garden, but a January rainstorm scrapped that plan. So the noontime photo opportunity — to be the media's only glimpse of them — was moved indoors to the Oval Office instead. The presidents and Obama will then have lunch in a private dining room off the Oval Office, where no one else was expected to join them.
"All of us would love to be flies on the wall and listening to that conversation," White House press secretary Dana Perino said.
She added, "I'm sure their conversation will range from everything from personal experiences here — I'm sure they'll talk a little bit about raising children in the White House, raising children when you're a public figure and how to protect them."
It was also quite possible, given the heavyweights in the room, that the topics could be far weightier. Both Bush presidents, Clinton and Carter have had extensive experience coping with Middle East strife; Obama is about to inherit a bloody conflict between Israel and Hamas.
The rare presidential joint appearance also offered Bush, who ends his two terms deeply unpopular, to again show he is rising above the fray.
Already, the White House is brimming with symbolism of a change in power. The construction of inauguration-parade viewing stands is accelerating on Pennsylvania Avenue, right in front of the White House. Perino said Bush and first lady Laura Bush have "been working to box things up."
Bush, Carter, Clinton and George H.W. Bush were last together in January 2007, to attend President Gerald Ford's funeral service in Washington
The last White House event to draw the former presidents was a November 2000 celebration in honor of the White House's 200th anniversary. But one of the former presidents, Ronald Reagan, who was afflicted with Alzheimer's disease, was unable to attend.
All of the living presidents were last at the White House in 1981: Richard Nixon, Ford, Carter and Reagan, who was president then. The three former presidents were there before leaving as part of the American delegation to the funeral of Egypt's Anwar Sadat, who had been assassinated.
On that day, all the presidents stood in a circle inside the White House, discussing news of the world. The dominant topic? The Middle East.
They were joined in the conversation by one other leader — Vice President George H.W. Bush, who later went on to join their presidents' club.

Obama Names Chief Performance Officer

NPR.org, January 7, 2009 · Obama announced his selection of Nancy Killefer as chief performance officer. She will work out of the White House with federal agencies to set performance standards and hold agency managers accountable for progress.

President-elect Obama is likely to field questions ranging from the debacle over filling his vacant Senate seat to plans for passage of a budget-busting economic stimulus package during a news conference on Wednesday.

The stimulus plan — expected to cost $775 billion – has drawn the ire of some congressional budget hawks who are concerned about the measure's cost. The president-elect is promising a long-term goal of fiscal discipline in Washington despite the recovery plan's short-term cost.

Obama has said he is seeking passage of a pork-free economic stimulus package, saying the exclusion of pet projects will represent a new standard. Just two weeks from taking office, Obama vowed Tuesday to "bring a long-overdue sense of responsibility and accountability to Washington" and called budget reform "an absolute necessity." The president-elect said this week he wants Congress to pass the stimulus plan by the end of the month or the first week of February.

NASA: Mike Griffin out, Charlie Bolden in?
posted by Robert Block on Jan 6, 2009 1:34:17 PM

When Barrack Obama takes the Oath of Office on January 20, NASA Administrator Mike Griffin will be clearing out the last of his possessions from his office and heading off to a new career in either academia or the aerospace business.

At least, that’s the word circulating in the halls of power in Washington and among some of the better-connected space industry poobahs. And though there's no official confirmation from either Griffin or Obama's transition team, that hasn't stopped folks from insisting that it's so.

According to these sources, Griffin’s resignation will be accepted on January 20, along with those of other Bush presidential appointees. He will be replaced as acting administrator by Chris Scolese, currently NASA's associate administrator and former chief engineer, until a new administrator is named.

Griffin's press secretary, David Mould, said Griffin stepping down for Scolese "would likely be the case if he is not asked to stay beyond the 20th. But there has been no official discussion so far."

Other agency insiders, however, say that Griffin has been operating under the assumption for the last several weeks that he will be leaving on January 20, and has already started taking stuff out of his office back to his house. In fact, Griffin sent an e-mail to friends just after Christmas with a new private e-mail address. A copy of the e-mail, obtained by the Orlando Sentinel, reads, simply: “All – In the event that I am not asked to remain at NASA after 20 Jan 09, and should the need to reach me arise, the above e-mail address will always work. Mike”

Some of Griffin's closest friends and supporters, including his wife, Rebecca, and former astronaut Scot Horowitz, launched a campaign to try to convince the incoming administration to keep Griffin, a veteran rocket scientist. The sometimes heavy-handed effort ranged from soliciting members of Congress during the last space shuttle launch at Kennedy Space Center, to a much-publicized on-line petition and even an e-mail from Rebecca urging that her husband be retained.

But Beltway insiders say the effort backfired and even some of Griffin’s most ardent supporters on the Hill, like Florida’s senior senator, Democrat Bill Nelson, saw the lobbying as craven.

Griffin's last day at NASA headquarters could be Friday, January 16.

So who is going to replace Griffin? Again, there's lots of chatter -- but there's no word from anyone who speaks directly to the currently most-famous occupant of the Hay-Adams Hotel.

Still, there are several names out there, and one has been getting mentioned in the last few days more than the rest: former astronaut Charlie Bolden.

Maj. Gen. Charles Frank "Charlie" Bolden, Jr. is a 63-year-old retired U.S. Marine Corps officer who served from 1981 to 1994 as an astronaut. A 1968 graduate of the United States Naval Academy, he became a Marine aviator and test pilot. After his time with NASA, he became deputy commandant of midshipmen at the naval academy.

An African American, he is perhaps best known by millions as the virtual host of the Shuttle Launch Experience attraction at Kennedy Space Center.

Bolden was asked during an online chat this afternoon organized by the Conrad Foundation about reports that he might be Obama's pick to head NASA. Bolden replied that while he's "incredibly honored" that his name has been attached to the reports, he has not been approached by the transition team about the job.

Bolden's name, however, has been shopped around by Obama transition team members to various space industry leaders in recent days to gauge their reaction. He is also reportedly being championed by Sen. Nelson. Nelson could not be reached for comment, though a spokesman said that the senator regards him as a "top notch" individual.

Other names that the Obama team has been mulling over include, Scott Hubbard of Stanford University, a member of the Columbia Accident Investigation Board and leader of the re-examination of the Vision for Space Exploration; Wesley Huntress at the Geophysical Laboratory at the Carnegie Institute; Dr. Sally Ride, America's first female astronaut; and Dr. Alan Stern, a planetary scientist who once worked at NASA running robotic missions to other planets.

The current head of Obama’s transition team, Lori Garver, is hoping to be deputy administrator.

U of C scholar to join Obama administration

January 7, 2009 8:45 PM | No Comments | UPDATED STORY |

WASHINGTON--Cass Sunstein, a longtime University of Chicago legal scholar and prominent author, is set to take up a key cause in the Barack Obama administration: regulation.

The president-elect is expected to name Sunstein - his friend and informal adviser - to head the Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs, a transition official said late today.

A low-profile position in the current administration, the job is likely to be a higher-wattage one after Obama takes office this month.

Obama has promised an overhaul to federal regulation, specifically of the U.S. financial markets, and Sunstein's job description suggests a more sweeping agenda.

"This office is in charge of coordinating and overseeing government regulations," a transition official said Wednesday, "and a smarter approach to regulation is key to making government work better and getting better results in terms of protecting health, the environment, etc."

Besides that, Sunstein brings a measure of star power to the post, as a leading constitutional scholar and the Felix Frankfurter Professor of Law at Harvard.

He joined the Harvard faculty this year after many years at the University of Chicago, where he is still a visiting professor.

Along with economist Richard Thaler, Sunstein is co-author of the popular current book "Nudge: Improving Decisions about Health, Wealth, and Happiness." In it, the two examine how setting up thoughtful "choice architecture" can encourage people to make beneficial choices without restricting their freedom to choose.

Sunstein is the author of many other books and articles, and much of his recent work is devoted to exploring the relationship between law and human behavior.

He is a graduate of the Harvard Law School and a former clerk to U.S. Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall. He also served as an attorney and adviser in the Office of the Legal Counsel of the U.S. Department of Justice.

Sunstein married Harvard professor and Pulitzer Prize winner Samantha Power after the two met on the Obama campaign. He also has been mentioned as a possible Obama nominee to the Supreme Court.

Obama Digs In for His BlackBerry

By JEFF ZELENY
WASHINGTON — President-elect Barack Obama has yet to relent, but he conceded that he might be losing the battle to keep his independent lifeline to the outside world.

“I’m still clinging to my BlackBerry,” Mr. Obama said Wednesday. “They’re going to pry it out of my hands.”

Of all the fights facing Mr. Obama as he prepares for the White House, one of the most maddening for him is the prospect of losing the BlackBerry that has been attached to his belt for years. It is, he has vigorously argued, an essential link to keeping him apprised of events outside his ever-tightening cocoon.

“This is a concern, I should add, not just of Secret Service, but also lawyers,” Mr. Obama said, speaking in an interview with CNBC and The New York Times. “You know, this town’s full of lawyers. I don’t know if you’ve noticed.”

Mr. Obama shared his agitation at the prospect of losing his last form of direct communication with friends and other advisers who sent him e-mail throughout the presidential campaign. But he, like President Bush before him, is being advised for security reasons and his own legal protection to refrain from sending e-mail during his presidency.

“I don’t know that I’ll win,” Mr. Obama said. But, he added, “I’m still fighting it.”

Obama picks Clinton aide as Pentagon No. 2
By ANNE GEARAN – 1 hour ago

WASHINGTON (AP) — President-elect Barack Obama chose a longtime Democratic defense expert and industry lobbyist to be the No. 2 official at the Pentagon on Thursday, and flanked Bush administration holdover Robert Gates with other Democratic advisers.

Obama's choice to be the deputy defense secretary, William J. Lynn, was a top Pentagon budget official under former President Clinton and a defense adviser to Democratic Senator Edward Kennedy before that.

Lynn is currently a senior lobbyist for defense contractor Raytheon Co., and his selection stands in contrast to Obama's campaign promise to keep lobbyists at arm's length.

"Because Mr. Lynn came so highly recommended from experts across the political spectrum, the President-elect felt it was critical that he fill this position," Obama transition spokesman Tommy Vietor said.

"We are aware that Mr. Lynn lobbied for Raytheon, and are working with Mr. Lynn to craft a role for him that is consistent with the President-elect's high standards while balancing the need to fill this critical national security position."

After the election, Obama opened the door for lobbyists to work for him if they sign an ethics code that restricts their role in and out of government.

The transition team instituted a policy that said lobbyists can work for Obama's transition if they stop their advocacy efforts and avoid working in any field that they lobbied on in the last year. They also must pledge not to lobby the Obama administration on the same matters they focused on during the transition for a year after leaving Obama's service.

If confirmed by the Senate, Lynn would become the top civilian assistant to Defense Secretary Gates, who is staying on in the top civilian job.

Obama's transition office announced the names of several other Pentagon selections on Thursday, including Michele Flournoy for the No. 3 job as policy chief. Also a Clinton-era aide at the Pentagon, Flournoy has been the co-chair of Obama's Pentagon transition team.

In a statement, Obama said he is confident his picks will help build what he called a sustainable national security strategy that answers the threats of the 21st century.

Pentagon spokesman Geoff Morrell said Gates welcomes the selections and hopes for a quick confirmation.

"Prompt hearings and confirmation will help ensure a smooth transition of power in the Pentagon as we continue to fight wars in Iraq and Afghanistan," Morrell said.

Obama mother-in-law to join family in White House
By LISA TOLIN – 44 minutes ago
WASHINGTON (AP) — Get ready for the in-law in chief.
President-elect Barack Obama's mother-in-law, Marian Robinson, is moving into the White House at least temporarily to join Michelle Obama and the two children, transition officials said Friday.
That's good news not just for late-night comics, but for 10-year-old Malia and 7-year-old Sasha. During the campaign, Robinson retired from her job as a bank executive secretary to help care for her granddaughters.
"Mrs. Robinson will be coming with the family to help the girls get acclimated, and she will determine in the coming months whether or not she wants to stay in D.C. permanently," said Katie McCormick Lelyveld, spokeswoman for Michelle Obama.
Michelle Obama also made another hotly awaited decision: She's keeping the White House chef. Cristeta Comerford took the job in 2005 and is the first woman and first minority to serve as executive chef.
"Cristeta Comerford brings such incredible talent to the White House operation and came very highly regarded from the Bush family," Michelle Obama said in a statement released by the transition team. "Also the mom of a young daughter, I appreciate our shared perspective on the importance of healthy eating and healthy families."
Plenty of in-laws have taken up residence in the White House before, not to mention cousins, grandchildren and other relatives.
"Throughout history there have been many extended first families in office," said Robert Watson, author of "Life in the White House."
Ulysses S. Grant's father-in-law, Richard Dent, stayed for several years. Harry S. Truman's mother-in-law, Madge Gates Wallace, lived there, too, and was critical of her son-in-law.
"She never liked him. She always felt that Bess had married below her station," said Myra Gutin, a first lady historian and professor at Ryder University in New Jersey.
"For his part, he was gracious. Whatever Mother Wallace wanted, she pretty much got."
Mamie Eisenhower's mother also had extended stays, but like her daughter she tended to sleep until noon, said Maria Downs of the White House Historical Association.
Even the presidents' mothers can be tough. Lillian Carter stayed in the White House and got on well with her son Jimmy, but Gutin said that when he first told her, "Mom, I'm going to run for president," she replied, "President of what?"
By all accounts, Obama has a good relationship with his mother-in-law. She had put off retirement for years, but finally retired last summer to take care of the granddaughters while their parents campaigned.
"She didn't want anyone else taking care of the kids but her," McCormick Lelyveld said. "She wanted to be the one there."
Barack Obama has called her one of the unsung heroes of his campaign, and spoke of holding her hand on election night.
But when asked by "60 Minutes" if Robinson would move in, he quipped: "Well, I don't tell my mother-in-law what to do. But I'm not stupid. That's why I got elected president, man."
Associated Press Writer Darlene Superville contributed to this report.

“I’ve never lived outside of Chicago, so I don’t know,’’ said Mrs. Robinson, hesitating a bit as she considered last year whether she was willing to move into the White House. “In the end, in the end, I’ll do whatever. I might fuss a little, but I’ll be there.”

They said McCain couldn’t be trusted with the button, but take away The One’s cigarettes and Blackberry (maybe) and dump this on him and, well — let’s just say I’m increasingly optimistic Iran will be dealt with “harshly” when the time comes.

I’m looking forward to the inevitable Eddie Murphy takeoff, with Murphy playing the characters of the president, the first lady, and of course the “sassy” matron in a fat suit. Exit question: Did I miss any hacky mother-in-law jokes here? Something involving a rolling pin and hair curlers, maybe?

The Kevin Martin Era Is Ova.

Julius Genachowski Said to Be Obama’s Choice for FCC Chairman

Jan. 12 (Bloomberg) -- President-elect Barack Obama will nominate Julius Genachowski, former chief counsel for the Federal Communications Commission, to lead the agency, a Democratic official said.

Genachowski, an Obama adviser and one of his top fundraisers, worked at Barry Diller’sIAC/InteractiveCorp and helped found Rock Creek Ventures, which provides funding for Web startups. He needs confirmation from the U.S. Senate before he can follow Republican Kevin Martin as chairman of the agency that regulates telephone, cable and broadcast companies.

The FCC’s tasks include helping broadcasters and households cope with February’s switch to digital signals, which could cut service to millions of homes that rely on traditional analog televisions. The agency also may promote high-speed Internet use, which Obama has identified as a key step in boosting the U.S. economy.

Other priorities may be helping parents control what their children watch on TV and encouraging diversity in media ownership, goals listed on the Obama Web site www.change.gov. The site also calls for support of so-called network neutrality rules, which would bar network operators from favoring some sites by letting their content reach Web users faster.

As I've mentioned before, I have a countdown clock on my MAC dashboard now ticking off the 3 hours and few minutes until Dubya leaves office. I'm curious what will happen to it when it ticks off the last second. Will it explode?? Will it disintegrate?? Will it simply fade into history??

As long as it doesn't damage my computer!! tongue.gif

I have waited for this day for a long time... as have most of us.

I have never in my life felt relieved to see a President leave office but I would say that "relieved" is how I best sum up my feelings of Bush's departure. I would have never believed that I would see a President do so much damage to a nation, abuse his power, or to mount such an assault on our Constitution.

To say I'm glad to see Bush go would be an extreme understatement. His departure is probably the best thing that has ever happened to our nation and our democracy at least in recent memory.

As to Barack... I could not be happier with our choice of our leader. He is the antithesis of Bush in almost every respect. Highly intelligent, well-spoken, charismatic, intellectual, and authentic are but a few of the words I would use to describe him and his election confirms a desire for change in the very nature of our government and a repudiation of Bush / GOP policies and leadership.

Aside from the historical connotations I believe his Presidency will be historic on its own merits. I believe that Obama has the potential to be one of the best Presidents to ever serve this nation. I may be optimistic... again... finally, but I do believe that the true potential is there. Difficult times can make great leaders. If Obama rises to the challenge as I believe he will, he has the potential to be one of our best. God knows we have seldom faced more daunting challenges.

So to President Bush I say... Goodbye and good riddance you son of a bitch.

To President Obama I say... God be with you, our nation, and all of my best wishes in this most difficult challenge. Godspeed and God Bless.

Dean: His Presidency Will Unite the World

To Howard Dean, Chairman of the Democratic Party, the election of Obama as President of USA ranks together with that of John F Kennedy as the most important presidential elections in US history. He said that Obama epitomizes the power of the new generation driven by the force of ideas and common humanity.
“I think he is a person with a deep intellectual understanding of other people around the world. He is much more of an international person than President Bush. I also believe that he is going to be more respectful of different opinions. He has a broader world view as a result of his upbringing, background and exposure”.
Dean stressed that Obama’s generation is one that has come with a resolution against ethnic, racial or religious discrimination in America and the world at large. He noted that the greatest support for Obama in the November 4, 2008 election came from the younger generation.
“Today, as Obama assumes the presidency there is a huge generational change. A new generation has taken over in the United States. It is a new world that Obama will rule. He is a quintessential politician who is extraordinarily smart. Obama demands excellence,” he said.
Dean said Obama’s programmes revolve around creating jobs, renewable energy such as solar energy and biomass adding that countries like Nigeria could do the same to improve their energy sector. The Democratic Party boss advised Nigerians and other African countries to perish the idea of Obama visiting the continent of his father’s origin within the first one year of his assumption of office. He explained that the enormity of the problems at home would make it impossible for him to go globe-trotting in the early months of his presidency. He predicted that Obama would likely visit Europe and Asia before looking in Africa’s direction.
“I think it means that Africa would have some real attention paid to it by not just the president, but by his people. But just like I said earlier, Africa should be realistic in their expectation. Because of the crisis at home, I don’t see Obama visiting Africa within the first year of his presidency. This is because he will really have a lot on his hand,” he said.
